Phenol sympathetic block has value in the treatment of ischemic rest pain, gangrene, intermittent claudication. Paget¢¥s disease of bone and pain associated with pancreatitis and carcinoma of pancreas, etc.
But after systemic use of phenol, systemic complications such as central nervous depression, vasomotor depression and renal injury could be happened by high blood concentration, infrequently.
To determine the blood concentration after ordinary sympathetic block by use of phenol, author carried out gas chromatographic procedure for quantitative detection of phenol in blood.
Gas chromatography (GC-6A) was equipped with 3m glass column packed with 3% OV-17 and 80-100 mesh.
Blood phenol level showed peak value in 15 minutes following phenol injection and then decreased markedly in 60 minutes.
Therefore it is considered that close observation for at least 15 min. after phenol lumbar sympathectomy was necessary.
